To find the right curtain length measure from the floor to where you ll hang the rod usually 4 to 6 inches above the window frame. When you hang the curtain rod high it will make the window appear taller. Measure 2 inches to the right and left of the top corners of the window frame trim. Locate the wall studs with. Choose one closest to your measurement erring on the side of a few inches longer rather than shorter. For example on a 54 inch wide window you could extend your curtain rods up to 9 inches on each. Measure the distance between the top of the window frame and the ceiling.

Determining the height in most cases you ll be attaching the curtain rods to the wall over the window not to the window frame itself. One rule of thumb is that they should sit 4 6 inches above the window frame. Curtains come in common lengths like 63 84 and 96 inches. Then you can just drill small pilot holes through your two template marks.

Standard curtain rod placement 1. The length of the curtains is also a factor. Decide whether you want your curtain rod to hang on the window frame or extend past it. Hanging curtain rods high above the window frame adds height to the wall and works best with long panels or drapes.

Load up your power drill with a small pilot hole bit we used a 3 32 one and hold your template above your window with the edge lined up with the outside edge of the window trim and the top held flush to the ceiling. Limit the length of your curtain rods to no more than one third wider than the width of the windows. Mark the wall with a pencil to indicate this area. You may need to adjust the height of the pole for different curtain hanging styles.

Your curtains may hang from the pole using a sleeve rings or eyelets. In most spaces a rod with decorative finials hung on the wall outside of the window frame will look best and provide the most coverage. The higher you hang the curtains the taller the window appears but on average the rods should be between 2 and 4 inches above the top of the window. Allow about 3 inches on each side of the window.

A rule of thumb from architectural digest is that curtains should be hung between 4 to 6 inches above the window frame so install your curtain rod accordingly. Mark with chalk or a pencil. Ideal position for the curtain rod is 6 inches above the window trim but you may need to adjust this up or down so the curtains end where you want them.
